Senior Home Safety Requires the Right Products and Equipment

Senior Home Safety in Charlotte, NC

Senior-Home-SafetyIt is very common these days for the elderly to want to live out their lives in the comfort of their own home. However, as people age and their strength diminishes or they have difficulty maintaining a steady balance, as well as other health related issues, the safety of the senior at home can be compromised if certain products or equipment aren’t taken into consideration.

The following products are highly recommended to help increase senior home safety.

Grab bars.

Grab bars are not the same as a towel bar. Grab bars are designed to support the full weight of an adult should they lose their balance. Using a towel bar to steady one’s balance or to prevent a fall can result in serious injuries.

Grab bars could be installed in the shower to help the senior should they slip and start to lose their balance. They can also be installed in other areas around the house to help the senior get up from or lower themselves to a seated position. These work well around the toilet area for this purpose.

Bath Bench.

A bath bench is a great way to help the senior feel more comfortable and safer while bathing, especially if they are known to have balance issues. A handheld showerhead helps to make this particular piece of equipment more convenient.

Grabbers or reachers.

Grabbers/reachers are beneficial for seniors who have limited mobility or a weak grasp. They are a pincher-like device that provides help to a senior who has trouble bending down to pick something up or to reach something up high on a shelf.

Kitchen aids.

There are several kitchen devices that will help make opening bottles and cans, cutting and dicing, and even peeling potatoes easier. If your loved one is someone who loves to cook, you may want to look into some of these kitchen helpers.

Specialized Telephones.

If your loved one has poor vision or is hard of hearing, they may be intimidated by your average telephone. Yet telephones are a life line and a great way to communicate to ensure that your loved one is safe.

Consider installing phones with large numbers and a good quality speaker. You may even consider a hands-free telephone. Be sure to have emergency contacts and numbers readily accessible near every phone in the house.

It’s difficult to have eyes on an aging parent or loved one 24/7. Therefore, proper senior home safety could mean investing in some or all of the products mentioned above.
