Alzheimer’s Care in Charlotte NC
March 6th through the 12th is National Sleep Awareness Week and if your father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he may be dealing with a number of challenges. One of those challenges could very well be insomnia.
Insomnia is a condition in which a person is unable to get a solid night’s sleep. It can be caused by many different factors, including the types of food or beverages he drinks, prescription medications, anxiety and stress, and more.
While it’s important to get down to the root cause of the insomnia it may be necessary to consult his doctor to see if there’s anything he or she can do or prescribe that can help your father get a restful night’s sleep. Somebody who has insomnia may not be able to fall asleep or they may be able to drift off but have a tendency to wake up several times during the night and have a difficult time getting back to sleep.
If your father is dealing with insomnia, he may not be as aware of it or, depending on the stage of the Alzheimer’s, he may not be able to communicate the issues to you effectively. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to some of the subtle signs that could indicate he is having difficulty sleeping at night.
Here are three signs that insomnia may be a very real problem for your father.
Potential Sign #1: He wakes up exhausted.
If your father has a tendency to wake up in the morning and still seems completely exhausted, it might be due to poor rest during the night. This might not be directly linked to insomnia itself, but could be some other sleep-related issue that needs to be addressed.
Potential Sign #2: He is up during much of the night.
If you have been talking to your mother and she has commented that your father constantly gets up during the middle of the night, walks around, watches TV, or does other things, it’s likely due to his struggle to stay asleep.
Potential Sign #3: He falls asleep during the day, especially at inopportune times.
Your father may be falling asleep while eating lunch, watching TV in the afternoon, or even when somebody’s talking to him. If this is unusual behavior for him, it could be a sign that he’s not getting sleep at night.
The first thing to do is evaluate his caffeine consumption. If he’s drinking coffee late at night, encourage him to give this up, at least for a couple of weeks and see how things work out with his sleep. You should also encourage him to make an appointment with his doctor to discuss the issue more closely.
